The act of finding or creating a reason why something that happened should have happened, within the reality of the scene. A concept central to Del Close and Charna Halpern's teaching.
The principle from Truth in Comedy: "There are no mistakes — everything is justified."
Retroactive justification is the canonical form. When something unexpected occurs — a physical accident, a non-sequitur, a forgotten detail — justification works backward from the event to construct a narrative reason for it. The spy trips and falls → "My god, the poison is kicking in." The fall is now not an error but a plot point.
Prospective justification is how masters actually use it. TJ Jagodowski and Dave Pasquesi build atmospheric context — relationship weight, environmental detail, emotional grounding — so that when the "weird" offer arrives, it already has a home. This is justification as scaffolding rather than rescue. You're not saving a mistake; you're building a world rich enough that anything that happens in it makes sense.
The technique works because of irreversibility: the event already happened. It cannot be undone. The only choices are to ignore it (breaking shared reality), to acknowledge it as a mistake (breaking the fourth wall), or to justify it (integrating it into the shared reality). Justification is the only option that preserves the scene.
Justification is the mechanism underlying Be Thankful. Gratitude is the mindset; justification is the move. When you whisper "thank you" at an unexpected event, justification is what you do with that gratitude — you find the reason this gift was exactly what the scene needed.
Advanced justification extends to choices you disagree with. If your partner makes an offer you don't like, your job isn't to like it — it's to justify it. Find the reality in which that offer makes perfect sense, and build from there. This is acceptance elevated from tolerance to creative act. Justifying your partner's accident is the primary mechanism of Elevating — it makes them look like they planned it.
A related but distinct concept: Johnstone's reincorporation also creates retrospective meaning, but across longer time spans. Justification says "that weird thing you just did was brilliant because..." Reincorporation says "remember that weird thing from ten minutes ago? It returns now with new weight." Justification rescues the immediate moment. Reincorporation weaves the entire show into a coherent tapestry. Callbacks are the visible product of reincorporation.
The limit: Over-justification produces tortured logic that the audience can smell. The test: does the justification create a discovery (the audience thinks "of course!") or a rationalization (the audience thinks "they're explaining")? If the scene stops to explain, you've over-justified. Half-hearted justification is equally deadly — it reads as apologizing for your partner's offer instead of celebrating it. Commitment is non-negotiable.
