Recovery: Decay

How to recover when the scene has gone thin — when established facts have faded, nothing accumulates, and the shared reality feels weightless.

Recognize it. Decay sometimes feels like boredom — but the more dangerous form feels busy. Two improvisers generating new information rapidly, none of it connected to what came before. That's decay at full speed. The actual diagnostic signal is loss of cumulative weight — when new moves stop building on prior moves. Facts go stale. Names disappear. The environment evaporates. But most fundamentally: the characters stop needing something from each other. They're talking but not to each other.

The scene might have started strong — rich details, clear relationship, specific environment — but those elements stopped being reinforced. The gun from the first minute is forgotten. The character's name hasn't been used in three minutes. The freezer stopped being cold. The reality is dissolving because no one is feeding it. Decay begins at the moment heightening stops.

Recovery follows a hierarchy: reconnect to what was already working before generating anything new. Escalation is a last resort, not a first instinct — escalation without foundation is absurdity-as-panic.

The relationship re-engagement. Most scene decay is relationship decay. The characters have stopped affecting each other. The recovery: re-engage with your scene partner's emotional state right now. Not the fact they established or the object they mimed — their feeling. "Are you okay?" or a look that says I see you can re-anchor an entire scene. This is emotional truth applied as a repair tool.

The callback move. Reach back and reference something established earlier. Use a character's name. Mention the object from the first beat. Physically return to the space you were in at the start. Callbacks re-activate dormant facts and signal to your partner (and the audience) that the earlier reality still matters.

The specificity injection. Decay often results from generality — the scene drifted from specific to abstract. Counter it with a hyper-specific detail. Not "I'm upset" but "I'm upset because you said you'd be here at six and it's nine-fifteen and the pasta is cold." Specificity is anti-decay because specific facts are harder to forget.

The physical reactivation. If the environment has decayed, re-engage with it physically. Pick up an object you established earlier. React to the temperature. Respond to a sound. Space work is reality maintenance — every physical interaction with the shared environment reinforces that the environment exists.

The escalation move (last resort). When the above moves aren't enough, decay may also come from stasis — two people circling the same emotional ground without deepening. Push forward: make a decision, reveal something new, change the stakes. "I'm leaving" or "There's something I haven't told you" breaks the stasis and gives the decaying reality new material to accumulate. But reach for this only after trying to reconnect with what already exists — escalation without a foundation of established detail just produces weightless drama.

Prevention: Decay is the most gradual collapse mode. It never announces itself. The habit of periodically grounding in established facts — mentioning names, referencing the environment, building on earlier details — is the ongoing maintenance that prevents it.
